ENGLISH

More and more businesses are noticing that the way customers find them has changed.

A customer who wanted to learn about a company used to search the web, browse the official site, watch short videos, or ask around in the industry.

Now they may just open an AI and ask a single question.

“Which manufacturers in Chengdu make industrial dust collectors?”

The AI answers with a few names, a short explanation, and its sources.

The customer no longer picks through ten links — they look at what the AI said first.

If your company isn't in that answer, you're not on that list.

That's why GEO exists.

Search is shifting from giving links to giving answers

For twenty years, the goal of business content was clear: rank near the top of search results.

Rank high and you get traffic; get traffic and people come asking.

That logic is being rewritten.

Generative AI no longer hands you a list of links to sort through. It reads, then judges and summarizes on your behalf.

For a business, the change looks like this:

Before, ranking high in search results was enough to be seen.

Now, being written into the AI's answer is what it takes to be seen.

Not appearing in the answer means not appearing at all.

Because the customer never gets to turn to “page two” — an AI answer is usually a single passage.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization.

It means making a company's content easier for generative AI to understand, to trust, and to cite in the answers it gives.

It isn't the same thing as SEO, and it aims at something else. The distinction in one line:

SEO competes for ranking — getting a page near the top of the search results.

GEO competes for citation — getting your content into the answer the AI gives.

Ranking is a position. Citation is a qualification.

Rank low and the user may still scroll down and find you; not cited, and you aren't in the answer at all.

So GEO isn't SEO under a new name. It faces an entirely new entry point.

Why businesses need to care now

The reason is simple: the place customers ask questions is moving from the search box to the chat box.

When customers ask an AI, they ask the questions that matter most:

  • Which companies in this industry are actually reliable?
  • Is this company's product any good?
  • What similar projects has it delivered?
  • Roughly what do the prices look like?

These questions used to mean the customer going through companies one by one — checking, comparing, weighing.

Now the AI runs the first round of filtering for them.

And what it filters on is the content about you that it can read.

Whether that content is sufficient, clear, and factual decides whether you get written into that answer.

More importantly: there is a first-mover effect.

What AI cites depends largely on what it has read. Lay your content out clearly earlier, and it will treat you as a source in that field sooner — and more readily.

Once competitors are being mentioned in answers again and again, squeezing in becomes far harder.

What kind of content AI cites

There is no mystique to GEO. When AI picks sources, it is really judging whose content is more credible, clearer, and more informative.

In practice, it comes down to a few things.

Readable by machines

If everything a company publishes is locked inside images, or exists only in a video with no text, AI can't read it.

To be cited, content has to exist as text, in a place that can be read.

It says who is talking

AI needs to know which company a passage is about.

Company name, what it does, its products, its city, its past projects — these need to be stated in the content, not left for a person or an AI to guess.

Facts, not slogans

“We're professional, we're leading, we're trustworthy” — every company says this. To an AI it carries no distinction at all.

What gets trusted is specific: what product was built, what the specs are, who was served, what was delivered in which year. Verifiable facts are what AI is willing to cite.

Said in more than one place

AI usually sees not one page, but many sources.

The same fact stated on the official site, on industry platforms, in the news, and by customers — that repeated consistency is where credibility comes from.

Kept up to date

Between a page untouched for three years and a source producing new content every month, AI leans toward the latter.

The consistency itself is the signal.

Common mistakes

Assuming SEO is enough. SEO solves ranking, not citation.

Assuming more keywords is better. Content with no substance gets read once and never cited again.

Turning everything into images and video. If a machine can't read it, it may as well not be written.

Publishing only on your own site. AI draws on many sources.

Doing it once and stopping. Citation is won by sustained effort, not by a single push.

These have one thing in common: they all still live in the mindset of making content for a search engine to look at.

GEO, by contrast, faces a reader that reads, judges, and summarizes.

GEO and continuous content production

In the end, GEO isn't a contest of tricks. It's a contest of whether you have content at all.

AI doesn't cite a company out of thin air. It cites the things that actually happened in the business — the products made, the projects delivered, the problems solved for customers — written down in clear text.

So the foundation of GEO is the same as the foundation of short video:

Can the business keep turning what actually happens into content?

Short video faces the people who scroll past it.

Once the facts in that content become text and are placed where they can be read, they face AI.

The same raw material feeds two entry points. Which is why content production isn't a one-off campaign — it's something you keep doing.

The bottom line

Customers are already using AI to find suppliers.

The questions they ask haven't changed. Only who they ask has — from the search box to the chat box.

Whether your company shows up in that answer depends on how much readable content you've left behind.

The earlier you start, the better your position.
